Gmail learns to Talk

Got this from InsideGoogle. Google's starting to roll out GTalk integration in Gmail. Basically, there's now a chat box at the bottom of the inbox, plus a Quick Contacts list above the labels and a link to the chat history. Now, I don't have it yet, so I can't say much, but you could read the official FAQ if you want.

Of course it's too early to tell, but I'm confident Gmail will still be competitive even after the new and vey-much-hyped Yahoo!Mail and Hotmail interfaces arrive. The only innovations those "futuristic" interfaces have are navigational features that mimic those of desktop applications. Now that's cool and all, but I'm betting it's not that hard for the Gmail Team to create a simpler-looking alternative that's just as cool and more feature-rich. Chat integration is just the start (you could say that Web Clips was the start, but it's still more of a toy than anything else). Let's just wait and see.
